Flashback Friday: "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".

Those who know me well - and those who know me very little - know one thing about me; I am a hopeless romantic. Romance in any form, in any shape touches my inner core. I live for romance and I need its manifestation to be present in my life on daily bases, or I will not thrive...
Therefore, the undying romantic melodies, particularly those from times long gone, capture and encompass my very soul.

"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is such a classic, a love song, where the lyrics complement the melody in an incredible alluring manner. The compilation is light like air, yet full of substance and inferior in beauty of poetic words.
Written originally as a show tune by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for the 1933 operetta Roberta, it was later performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, costarring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. Covered by numerous artists over the years, my absolute favorite and the most famous is the captivating performance by The Platters in 1958.

Listening to it today, tomorrow, any day at any time - when I was young and when I am old and grey - will always fill my heart with the only emotion worth living for:
the undying perception of love.

Oh you ARE so romantic Protege! And that is definitely one of the great love songs. I ued to have a record of the "Best of The Platters and The Drifters", and I love that era and the really brilliant songs that were written back then. My favourite version though was from the 1970's and I don't even know the singer, but it was constantly played on Radio Luxembourg 208 at the time and is still in my head today. And I'll be whistling this tune all weekend now thanks to you.
Hope you have a great weekend Protege!

This is a wonderful song that takes me back to my dancing days. It is a the most beautiful slowfox you can imagine. Music is such a powerful tool, it brings back memories, it makes the present just a little more beautiful, it comforts me when I'm down and gives a chance to celebrate life. What would I do without music?

Have a great weekend filled with music.

On our local radio station Fabuestereo, which I have mentioned once or twice at my blog, and where they play beautiful music, this piece is rather popular, only it is the orchestra version, without lyrics, and truth be told, I have always found it sad and melancholic. Maybe because I know deep down it is about love, and I haven't been all that lucky in that department? In any case, I know where it comes from, who made it famous, and that it is popular among the helpless romantics :-)

What is life without a little romance? We are lucky if we have it every day in our lives...others don't...I suppose that is why these songs live on! :)

Have a very Romantic weekend my friend!

I think your romanticism shows in the way you write. :-) My neighbor plays plenty of 60's music every morning and The Platters seem to be high on his list.. Nostalgia and romance. :-)
