My Red Sofa.

Not long ago my friend Stevie wrote an entertaining post listing ten things she really wants, but will most likely never buy. Among these was a new sofa.
I did buy a sofa for myself and additionally, it was a red sofa and so Stevie, this one is for you, as you requested pictures.

My red sofa was purchased by me, almost exactly six years ago, when I moved into my white house on a hill in December 2003. Being the largest place I have ever lived in, I needed furniture to fill out the endless space of several floors. Not keen on using all my savings, I decided to furnish my entire home with the decor available at IKEA. Literally everything in my house has been purchase there, including an old living room furniture set that my parents bought there about 25 years ago, when they moved to Sweden and which I inherited.

So, when it came to deciding on which sofa to get, I was first looking at a sofa of a nondescript colour. Wanting to keep it as neutral as possible, I thought of going in the direction of beige, purchasing a sofa and a chair. I brought good friends - a husband and a wife - with me to the store for help and encouragement. We walked around for a while when the husband pointed at a large red corner sofa on a display and said, "Why don't you get that one?". My first thought was "NO WAY!", but almost instantly I was intrigued. Suddenly the thought was appealing in more ways that one. I love colours endlessly and the fact that the sofa was L shaped would solve the issue with filling out a space and yet getting enough seating room.
And so I bought my red sofa. It was one of the best purchases I ever made. Its colour is so very fitting the holiday season, but it makes the house warm and inviting year around. It is the most comfortable sofa I have ever owned and as seen on the pictures here, it is loved not just be me and my guests, but also Batcat, who loves to lounge on it any chance he gets.

This is one of the most beautiful blog entries I have ever read. I love the whole story behind the red sofa and it has made me smile.
I am thinking of borrowing the idea of a blog entry about the 10 thingsI want but I will not probably buy.

I love it! I think I may get a red sofa when I ever get new furniture...if ever, lol...it'll make an intriguing dream anyway. So glad your husband had "the eye" to see it!

Red. The color kind of snuck up on me too, and it is starting to show up more and more in our tiny house! :)

I love your sofa, it's story, and your home's warm, cozy feeling. Batcat is one lucky little guy!

Have a beautiful weekend, Zuzana!

I love IKEA. Your sofa was a great choice and I love the other little touches of red. It's all pulled together so well, but looks like it all happened naturally. What an inviting and stylish home. :)

Your house looks cosy and warm. The first thought that escapes my mind while reading the post and looking at the picture was: Hmmm. I would like to curl up with a book on that red sofa. Red is a colour with many conotations in different cultures. Its the coluor of passion, freedom and many other things.

You have an eye for colour and a taste for decor. If the universe wills, I would like to come to your house and join you in eating the gingerbread cookies.

Have a nice week ahead!

Love and joy,
Susan

Protege,
Oh my goodness. What a beautiful room arrangement you have. And your red sofa is perfecto. Isn't it amazing when we think juxtapose and then when we work with it, it turns out to be the very thing you desired; nothing agaisnt juxtaposing though... that in itself can be very intriguing. I love your sofa and happy that you have shared it here. You'll have to ask my LadyCat about her kitties... :rub ba dub dub, 3 cats in a tub; and who to you think they be...Dubs, the Bear, and Skip, turn 'em out knaves all 3"...
Batcat looks like a cool cat! Have a wonderful day! The Bach

Zuzana, I adore your red sofa! I can see why you like it so much. It must make your living room warm and cozy during the dark days of winter and a happy place to come home to in the summer. I can tell that your decorating style has the the bohemian look that you love to wear as well. The artwork on the wall above looks so vibrant. The red of the sofa makes it pop.

I was first introduced to IKEA a little over 10 years ago. My son and DIL lived in Ohio and she discovered the store in Pittsburgh. Every time we visited them we made a special trip to the store. Even after they moved to Cleveland we drove 4 hours each way to the store. But then they moved back to Alabama, so no more IKEA visits. Imagine my delight when they opened an IKEA in Atlanta a couple of years ago. It is only 2 1/2 hours away. We go once or twice a year. I have made numerous purchases there; a stool, lamps, pictures and frames, storage boxes, curtains, pillows, fabric, a cabinet...on and on. I'm happy to hear you say how pleased you've been with the sofa. I'll keep them in mind when I get ready to make that purchase...a sofa is one thing on my list of 10 that I will buy one day.

On a side note, after reading your post about the Christmas ginger cookies, I saw a box of Nrakers at a local import store. I had to buy them. Delicious! And yes, I did receive your postcard. I'm so sorry for forgetting to let you know. The scenes on it are just as I imagined....bright, blue and beautiful! I love your tiny neat handwriting as well. Thank you.

Now, I am intrigued by the mention of the living room set your parents bought at IKEA 25 years ago. How has the store's design aesthetic changed over the years?

This room has such a warm feeling to it and the red just pops. Red is a very warm and inviting color. I've also read that it is a power color...you go girl!
Batcat is a soooo cute! His black and white is a great conrast against the red. You even color coordinated your kitty. We have a cat named BW...for black and white...Dubs for short.
Have a great weekend!

That is one cozy, warm and inviting sofa. In the Netherlands I lived within a ten minutes carride of IKEA. It was one of our favorite places to hang out. There was also a restaurant and on friday night when we didn't want to cook, we just went there. An easy meal and a lot of inspiration, what more could one ask for.

Nowadays we hardly get there because we need to drive more than 2 hours. Too bad.

Thanks for the nice pictures.

IKEA is great isn't it! Years ago when I lived in London I used to have one of their red sofas. I've now gone with browns and creams and earthy-stoney colours which seem to suit our countryside location.
I love the photo of Batcat reclining - cats really know how to do comfort!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Jeanne x

Daring, but totally lovely! You have an eye for decorating your house, the way that fits your life style and taste (some people know what they want, but they don't know the "how to."

I love that red couch and your living room decor. So pretty! I would like to buy a new couch myself one of these days. I'll probably choose a blue one though, just because it'll go with the blue rug and the soon to be blue paint on the walls.

Any posts somehow involving the Batcat are my favorites. He looks so comfy laying on that couch. My cat used to love to lay on the back of mine too. I was noticing I still have a lot of his hair there. He's been gone over a year now. At first I left it there because I missed him so much that I didn't want to lose anymore of him. Now I'm thinking it's time to part with that fur so I'll probably be cleaning it up this weekend.

Sometimes we just have to take that leap into color to help us realize that we are adventurous and that we are just the right amount "off center" - not nutty - just off center☺

I love that sofa and I love red. Right now only variations of red in my home from pink to deep cranberry - wait - I forgot - I do have some red in the family room and it delights me each and every time I see it!

it's fantastic!! and even better are those two big embroidered pillows, which look so great on it. are they from india? i have a similar rug that i bought in goa and those remind me of it.

you make me want to get a new, more wild cover for our ikea karlskrona sofa. we went with dull grey, mostly because sabin was a toddler when we got it and we could picture all too clearly sticky little chocolate-covered hands and grey seemed like it would absorb that kind of thing better. maybe it's time for a bold change. :-)

i have to admit that seeing your sofa and all those pillows and the art and books makes me want to come and visit you. :-)

Yes, that is a very festive sofa! I love looking at the pictures of your home, because it is so cozy and inviting. I am looking forward to the day that Emma is older and I can begin decorating nicely. Right now it is no use because she is still in the stage of making messes and spilling things!!

Love the red sofa! Love the energy of it and your lovely surroundings. I bought a taupe, biege sofa set years ago, though, I use pillows with reds, browns and gold tapestry. I am in need though of a sectional such as yours! I may go red this time!!! Pottery Barn has one I spied awhile back, that I love!

Thanks for sharing~ wish I had an IKEA around here, but I do shop it online.

thank you for such 'cheery' and 'happy' posts~ I always feel uplifted when I arrive and when I depart. xx

I really like color as well!, and am not afraid of it, as many people seem to be, not only with furniture, but with clothing even. I love your sofa! looks comfy, and surely warms up the environment...especially in winter, yes? Perfect match for Christmas decorations also!
