A Late Summer Walk.

Although I live in a very close proximity to the downtown of Denmark's second largest city, I also live a stone throw away from the country side. In fact, my neighbourhood lies at the city limits and I have beautiful natural scenery just outside my windows.

If I drive for about five minutes, I end up at an old estate with a large park like land, stretching across a large protected area. It is intersected by trails through old forests, following a small stream, all the way to the coast. Today the estate is part of the University and harbours the department of Archeology. Furthermore it functions as a Viking Museum, where ancient artifacts are on permanent display. Including the petrified, over 2000 year old body of the "Bog Man".

The surroundings are quiet and tranquil, with alleys lined by deep-rooted trees, leading to the old, water driven mill that still works on Sunday afternoons and from which the pristine forest trails head all the way to the sandy beaches through the natural woods from pre-historic times. I love to walk there and try to do so as often as I can.

There is nothing more therapeutic than a walk through beautiful nature on late summer afternoons. Or in any season, for that matter.

What an interesting place. Just the sort of place I would love to visit. I read the book about Schliemann and his discoveries. It was fascinating. I went to the Viking museum in York, England about 10 years ago. Grauballe Man is so wonderfully preserved. It is fascinating to contemplate how he must have lived and died. Your pictures of the grounds are beautiful....a wonderful retreat from everyday life.

Truly a piece of paradise! My little island is also rich in it's Viking heritage, and I love exploring the sites when I can. A lovely post, thank you for sharing.

Lovely and fascinating. Thank you so much. I feel like I'm seeing a magical place whenever I read about a truly ancient spot like this. So different from where I live--though I had my own late summer walk through a nearby forest and had similar thoughts about nature.

The archaeology and history you wrote about fascinate me. My daughter and I read about the bog bodies once when she was very young. I'd love to visit that museum.

Thanks, Z!

=Bhavesh,
thank you.;))

=stevie,
you are so well traveled and have such a vast knowledge about different aspects of life. I agree on Schliemann and the Troy excavation, I was fascinated about this already as a child and I read the book about him as well. In a matter of fact that was what inspired me to want to become and archeologist. Of course, I grew out of that but history and archeology still hols my interest.
Always enjoy your visits.;)xo

I have always been fascinated by Norse history, the Vikings, especially the Danes, made a lot of forays into Ireland in the past and Irish and Norse history are somewhat intertwined. I enjoyed reading this post.
