'Darkness Is My Light'.

This somewhat ominous title is actually a small excerpt from the lyrics to a song made by the band Imagination, called "Hold Me In Your Arms". For those of you who might be interested, there is a clip in the end of this post.

I own their album Closer, purchased as a tape almost twenty five years ago and it is right now on constant reply in my car, keeping me company on my very long drive home each day - after dark.

I love this album and I love this song in particular.
I love it's soulful harmonies and the eighties sound and I enjoy endlessly the memories as they come streaming back, while I recollect my youth to the gentle beats and the so very catching chorus.

Additionally, the mentioned words seem to sum up the period of the year we have just entered in a truly eloquent way.
November, together with December, account for the darkest month here in the cold North. This is the onset of time when twilight rules our days and when indeed, "darkness is our light".

I have mixed feelings about the increasing lack of light. Driving home after the onset of darkness makes for a very unpleasant ride, particularly during heavy rain storms when all I can see through the windshield is a distorted play of lights, resembling a watercolor painting.

Yet the twilight holds also a certain allure, as it instigates a sense of rest. It indicates that everything in nature is now slowly winding down and a period of stillness is ahead. Thus it beckons us to do the same - to retreat to our homes and enjoy the subtle lights of candles and the company of our loved ones.

As I have grown older, I have found novel joy in each season. The darkness of November has truly too its function, if only to reinforce our joy in the month of June, the month of light, balancing out our reality and putting everything into perspective.

(All images in this post are taken on our recent trip across the Danish Islands and in our home.)

Beautiful Zuzana. I too have found myself more appreciative of the change of seasons as I mature...I see the beauty in each although I must admit to growing tired of winter rather early.:) Thank you for a beautiful post!

Lovely photos Zuzana.

I like your thinking in turning the seasonal change to cold into a positive--as soon spring will return.

Wow - what stunning shots!

I'm sitting here and it's just turned 16.30 and it's pitch black... It has its function and the days are still full of colour, so there's nothing we can do but enjoy it.

Each season has its charm - I always have a hard time getting use to early darkness but I find peace knowing I only wish to be home and enjoy a relaxing time in a place I cherish.

Your colours are beautiful and your words as usual enchanting.

Beautiful photos, Z. I sometimes think of you at this time of the year, knowing that your long hours of darkness exceed our own seemingly endless hours. Something tells me that this winter will be more enjoyable than most for you. ;)

I'm not fond of driving in the dark either. We have deer to watch out for too.
You are very good at making the best of things.

The sky looks as if it is ablaze with fire. I believe the Northern skies are some of the most beautiful in the world.

Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. It will get dark shortly after I leave work each day. I always look forward to the end of February when the skies begin to get lighter again.

Enjoy your cozy night!

It certainly is changing, isn't it? We turn our clocks back one hour this weekend. It is always such a jolt to me...dark so early in the evening! My body has a hard time adjusting! Stay warm and cozy! At least that long drive home has a happy ending, right? :)

I'm glad that you can see so much positive, even in the darkness. I like the darkness of winter, it gives me a sense of comfort before renewal. Stunning photos.

I eventually like the darkness of winter, but it takes me a while to get into it.
Your first photo is really beautiful, Zuzana. Happy Friday!

I love that you see light even in darkness. This will get you through not only the darker seasons, but also the darkness that inevitably comes into our lives at times.

Thank you for the pictures. They are spectacular.

I do like the darkness of night best. But I have never lived where it is dark as long as you have it. I find that intriguing.
Great photos and I enjoyed the song : )

OMG, those pictures of the sky are so gorgeous!!!

I go to school and drive home from work in the dark. I don't care for it but there's not much that can be done about it. I feel for you.

Oh dear Zuzana, I can not find that enchantment in November! It is cold and dark and there are still more months of colder temperatures and darkness. Besides, the only good thing to me in Autumn is the color of the leaves and they have left in November. But I saw enjoy your description of nature!

yet more fantastic images, zuzana. you are an amazing photographer.

i too love twilight - it's a magical time i believe. and you are right - we would not be able to enjoy the months of light without experiencing the winter months. as hard as it is to adjust to daylight savings time and sunset coming sooner, i always remember that it's in the depth of december that the axis turns once again and the days start becoming longer.

have a blessed week, dear zuzana.

Would that be the Oresund Bridge?

Driving in to work today I was so struck by the fact that it was truly dark. One can call it twilight at the best, but it was rainy and foggy and it was not possible to drive without the headlights on.

The allure and concomitantly the drawback with Scandinavian climate is the light - the incredible abundance of it during summer and the total lack of it in winter.;)

Luckily, we are slowly moving towards the winter solstice and the illumination of the Holidays will help us cross that threshold of light, when everything will start turning again.;))

Thank you so much for all your lovely words and visits.;))

Xoxo
Zuzana

PS: Lynne, I answered you already, but it is the Storebælt Bridge (Big Belt Bridge) between the Danish Islands;)
