Ice Stalactite.

There is a large icicle just outside my bedroom window. Every morning, as I open the blinds, I can see its menacing shape. Beautiful and clean, as it is sharp and dangerous, resembling a spike of glass, ready to inflict serious damage.

Sculptured by nature some eight weeks ago, it has since then not diminished in size at all. I have not seen it melt or drip, it looks solid and majestic every day.
Fortunately, it poses very little threat to anyone. Below it is only a secluded area, where I have placed large flower pots. Therefore no humans nor animals are in harms way. Except my pots of course, but I assume that they will be strong enough to withstand the fury of the spike should it ever fall.

I find icicles as intriguing and fascinating, as much as they do frighten me. It is a given fact, that in a few weeks, when hopefully warmer temperatures will reach even Scandinavia, large chunks of ice and snow will become dislodged from roofs and windows, posing danger to people, animals and even parked cars on the street.

However, that time is still somewhat removed from our reality. Spring is yet nowhere in sight and in fact, it is suppose to snow again today.
Therefore every coming morning, as I open the blinds and yet again gaze at that dangerous beauty of ice, I will be reminded of the simple fact that Lady Winter continues to be very much in reign. Still, I know that if I wait patiently, that one particular day will come, when its sharp and pointy edge will have formed into drops of water.
And then I will know that spring is imminent.

  2. Icicles have for me a fairy tale like quality. The ones you show are long!
Bytheway, since you have traveled much, did you see that my next-to-last post was about China?

  3. They always make me think of ice castle for some reason. It's been an icicle-free winter here.. so far.

  5. Zuzana:

You talk of icicles while we have our air-cons running to 28 Temp already! Summer has already began here and its sweltering hot in the mid-day. What a contrast of nature and what diverse climatic conditions.

This medium is wonderful enabling people of different latitudes to talk in the same platform. Some good of technology, by Jove!

    Joy always,
    Susan

  7. Only someone in tune with nature and the Creator could find the simple beauty in an icicle and write about it. That is what makes life so precious the insights we have of the glorious gifts around us. I love your blog Zuzana. We still have snow but it is gradually melting, no icicles hanging around. Blessings to you and yours.

  8. We have a lovely sunny day here today, but snow is forecast! And there are some snowdrops peeping through in the garden. I do like icicles though.

  10. These are so fascinating to me, as it is snow! What a peculiar thing! I have heard of icecles being formed in western Guatemala, in the department of Quetzaltenango. That city can often reach subzero temperatures, but instead of snow, it gets frozen! My grandma, a native of that region, used to tell me lots of stories on how hard it was back in the day to bear the freezy weather in January. Lots of memories coming back from her with this entry of yours. It wouldn't been her birthday today also! Such a coincidence!
    Have a great day!
    *hugs*

  11. I posted a pic of the icicles at my house today! :) They only fall into my garden, and since that is frozen, - no harm done.
Stay warm & safe, sweet friend!

  14. Beautiful, but dangerous! Icicles are such free forms and are like snowflakes...no two are alike.

  15. That is some amazing icicle! I have never thought of the dangers posed by the sudden dislodging of icicles before - beautiful but dangerous! I really hope your thaw comes soon Zuzana, I know how very much you want to see the green shoots of spring...

  18. Reminds me of being a kid. We had a large peaked roof and it would be lined with huge icicles. I remember my Dad parking the car away from the house because of them. (I did not grow up in South Carolina)

  19. Hopefully, the pointy edges of winter will melt away soon for you. We have temps in the upper 50s predicted for this weekend. The sky was bright blue today when I went out to lunch...I think we may begin getting a few nice days here and there. I drove all the way home from work in daylight yesterday. That was nice.

  21. I love icicles but oh my goodness - 8 weeks and no sign of melting?! Yeah, I dont' think I would deal with that very well! That's one huge icicle!

I like to kick them off my car when I get them. Don't know why, it's just fun.

I gave an award to you and an award to Batcat! Please stop by and pick them up.

  24. I don't know if you have ever seen the movie "The Christmas Story", but ever since that movie icicles just make me laugh. They are beautiful though, aren't they?

I have always liked large hands on a man as well. (ie,...your last post.) I used to be obsessed with long beautiful nails on women when I was a little girl. I would buy fake nails at the super market and glue them on and stare at them for hours. hahaha!!

  25. Oh, you captured one and so beautifully. I love icicles but can't get a decent picture.

  26. Thanks for coming to my site and commenting on my snow pics. The snow lasted all of two days, except for a few snowmen who lasted longer. In some ways I miss the longer winters with snow staying on the ground. I used to live a mile high in the Utah mountains where we got plenty of snow. I always thought that the ice hanging down like yours was so beautiful, kind of like having a crystal chandelier outside.
