Sublime Sunset.

The sight of the sun in the season of late fall and winter is uncommon and the vision of sunsets almost absent. Setting early in the afternoons, the sun is very elusive, gone long before I return home.

The golden disk lies ever so low in the sky and as fall becomes winter, it moves to the southwest, no longer setting over a natural horizon. Still, if I am lucky to be home on a sunny day and the conditions are right, I get to see a glimpse of it as it slowly disappears behind the hills lying in the south. As it shifts out of sight, the birch trees and farms in my view become dark silhouettes on a canvas of silver. Like a gentle painter, the sun leaves behind brush strokes of warm colours on the evening sky for a short instance, before submerging us in dense darkness yet again, without any promises to return...

  1. Protege - a beautiful sunset as ever! You're so lucky to live in a place where you can get a clear view to the west for sunsets.

I hope you don't mind, but that top picture of yours could look even more beautiful by cropping away the sky at the top and the edges. I had a quick go myself and think this looks a little nicer. What do you think?

    All the best,
    Tom

  4. Wow that's a beauty of a sunset. Even more so because it's such a rare gift for you this time of year.
I love the colours you've captured. That fiery orange and the gold tones in the lower horizon are magical.. but mostly, that turquoise-blue sky is incredible and contrasts the orange perfectly. With all due respect to Tom and his wonderful photographer's eye, I think that your photo is perfect as is.

  7. That is a gorgeous orange sky! You mentioned the other day that there is a shorter amount of daylight there in the fall and winter, but I didn't realize that you meant the sun set in the afternoon! Yes, that would be significant! No wonder you love the candles this time of year!

  9. You always remind me to take a look around--to stop and smell the roses--or to at least look up at the sky and marvel at its beauty!
Thank you SO much for that gentle nudge back to the appreciation of what can so be easily overlooked.

  13. Your little birch tree does not have to display all the color herself - she looks lovely with the sunset behind her!

    Have a beautiful day!

  15. This posting ‘I really like.’ Your poetic words sound like they belong in a fable. I like how you keep the reader hanging at the end. These photos of the sunset are incredible. It’s almost like Mother Nature sets it up just for you to capture. I have no idea what kind of camera you use because the colors are vibrant. But, it would all be meaningless if you didn’t have that photographic eye. I’ll be gone for the next few days so in the meantime I want to wish you a “Happy Thanksgiving” xx ;-))

the sunsets here on the coast are always magnificent - they seem crisper more intense more colorful more everything! the other evening there was one of those settings that seemed to hold 2 suns separated by beautiful ribbons of purple and crimson clouds - gorgeous but i was unable to capture it - but these were gentle reminders of that day! :)

I'm not a fan of the color orange but it fits so perfectly in this picture.

What a gorgeous sunset! I didn't realize it set in the early afternoons.
