Favorite dialogue in a movie.

From the 1997 movie "Contact", directed by Robert Zemecki, adapted from the novel by Carl Sagan, starring, among others, Jodie Foster as "Ellie Arroway" and Matthew McConaughey as "Palmer Joss".

Ellie challenges Palmer to prove the existence of God, when he in turn asks her a question:

Palmer Joss: Did you love your father?
Ellie Arroway: What?
Palmer Joss: Your dad. Did you love him?
Ellie Arroway: Yes, very much.
Palmer Joss: Prove it.

  1. I remember that exchange very clearly. It hit me like a brick and I just sat back and said, "Oh." All the proof I'd been looking for to that point seemed suddenly unnecessary. I've wrestled with the particulars of my beliefs but I stopped needing proof of a higher power. That movie affected me profoundly.

  2. Diane, the same here. These were the most unforgettable lines I have heard and shaped my beliefs to what they are today.
